TORF Candidate Database - Advanced Online Access

Candidate profiles and documents will available on-line as of early January 2014 for fully registered schools.

School administrators will also have access to hard copies of candidates’ files in the Delta Kingston Waterfront Hotel, as of Wednesday, January 22nd, at 1:00 p.m.

Candidate Pool

The intention is to have 300-400 candidates in attendance on the TORF weekend.

Experienced (250+)

  • 250+ candidates.
  • The vast majority of the teachers in attendance will be experienced and will have Ontario or other Canadian teacher certification.
  • The academic and professional training of Canadian teachers is acceptable for certification in the USA.

Less than 2 Years' Experience

  • 75+ candidates.
  • There will be some graduating BEd candidates from Queen's (and possibly other universities) in attendance.
  • Queen's is very selective regarding admission. Related experience is given equal weight to academics in the selection process for the BEd program and, as a result, the graduates are older and more experienced than one might expect.
  • The high status and salaries for teachers in Canada attracts strong candidates to a career in teaching.

History and Context of TORF

The University

Queen's University, established in 1841, is a prominent Canadian university of 17,000 full-time students with undergraduate and graduate programs in the sciences, liberal arts and the professions. Queen's draws its students from across Canada and from more than 100 nations around the world.

The Faculty of Education

Queen's University has one of the larger Faculties of Education of the thirteen in Ontario. To be certified in Ontario, teachers normally complete a four year undergraduate degree plus a one year Bachelor of Education program.

Approximately seven hundred teachers graduate annually from Queen's with elementary or secondary school certification. Queen's Faculty of Education also offers an M. Ed. program, a PhD, and continuing teacher education courses.

Education Career Services

Among Canadian universities, Queen's is unique in having full-time Education Career Services distinct from a central career centre. Since 1986 the office has facilitated on campus recruitment for overseas schools. The decision to offer the first overseas recruiting fair in 1989 was in response to many requests from Ontario teachers and the expressed interest of overseas schools. In addition to the experienced Canadian teachers securing overseas positions through the TORF, Queen's annually places 10-20% of its own education graduates overseas in a variety of settings including international schools, ESL positions and development work.

Employment Equity

Queen's University has a responsibility for ensuring that Canadian Federal and Provincial employment equity guidelines are honoured at this event. We ask that school representatives consider both excellence and diversity when assessing the suitability of candidates. Selection criteria must be clear, flexible and relate to a candidate's ability to meet the requirements of the position. At Queen's, we can better serve the needs of both candidates and schools if we are informed of any unique host country employment policies and regulations that may influence the interview, selection and hiring processes.

Location and Travel Arrangements

Queen's University is located in Kingston, Ontario which is approximately halfway between Toronto and Montreal and is due north of Syracuse, N.Y. The city (123,000 including suburbs) is adjacent to the Thousand Islands Region and is a popular summer tourist area. Major employers include the University, Royal Military College (Canada's West Point), St. Lawrence College, hospitals, military bases, and major industries in aluminum, synthetic fibres, and communications.

There are several daily flights each way, on Air Canada, between Kingston and Toronto. If flying into Toronto, connections to Kingston might require changing terminals in Toronto but a shuttle service is provided. Excellent train service (a 2.0-2.5 hour trip) is available with VIA Rail from downtown Toronto, downtown Montreal and from the Montreal airport. Other possibilities are car rental or limousine service at the Toronto, Montreal or Syracuse airports. We can advise on travel arrangements.
