This program is located on Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, Ohsweken, Ontario. The program is offered through an education partnership with Six Nations Polytechnic. It is of special interest to those with a background or interest in Aboriginal language immersion teaching.
Six Nations of the Grand River is the largest First Nation in Canada with 23,770 members. Approximately 11,827 members reside on the reservation. Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca and Tuscarora nations are represented. Located near the city of Brantford, Ontario it covers 190 sq km. The reserve recognizes both a traditional Iroquois Council (hereditary) and an elected Band Council.
The main village of Ohsweken has all the necessary amenities like banks, restaurants, variety stores, gas stations, accommodations, craft shops, and radio station. Attractions include bingo, sports arenas, speedway, pow wow, camping and boating. There are many towns, cities close by for those who like to travel and shop. We are minutes away from Lake Erie for seasonal interest. There are five elementary schools for Grades K – 8, some offering immersion in Native Language. There is also a secondary school called Gaweni:yo. The main languages taught are Mohawk and Cayuga.
On Saturday, January 12, 2013 the class will be taking a fieldtrip to GoodMinds for a workshop on 'Selecting Relevant Resources' from 1:00 to 3:00pm. All are expected tp participate.
