Queen's University Faculty of Education offers an on-campus Aboriginal teacher education program at the Duncan McArthur Campus of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
This one-year, full-time program features courses with Aboriginal-specific content and practice teaching placements in First Nations and Provincial schools. The program prepares Aboriginal candidates and non-Aboriginal candidates to teach in First Nations and Provincial schools, and leads to a Bachelor of Education degree.
The Bachelor of Education (BEd) prepares candidates for the Primary-Junior divisions (Junior Kindergarten to Grade Six) or for the Intermediate-Senior divisions (Grade Seven through OAC). BEd graduates qualify for the Certificate of Qualification (formerly called the Ontario Teacher's Certificate) in one of those two divisional options depending on their course of studies.
The on-campus program is especially suited to both Aboriginal (Status, non-Status, or Métis) and non-Aboriginal students with a university degree who are interested in Aboriginal education. It may be of particular interest to mature students and those with experience in Aboriginal education. Non-Aboriginal students are also invited to apply, but priority is given to Aboriginal applicants.
Queen's University has many features which may be of interest to Aboriginal students such as an Aboriginal student counselling service, an Aboriginal Student Centre, and bursaries and scholarships for eligible Aboriginal candidates. The campus-based program also qualifies for financial assistance through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).
