At the clubs
Playing all this week on Yonge Street is Robby and the Researchers.
This blues band has hit the Toronto music scene with a bang! Their rendition of "Action Research Blues" is an astute look at the process of being an action researcher.
Here are the lyrics:
Action Research Blues
My knees they're shakin
Never done this before
I hope the fog is clearin
Where's the expert at the door
Chorus:
Come on now think it through
The more we think about it
We've got the action research blues
Identify a problem
What's bothering you
Imagine a way forward
Then decide just what to do
Chorus
Can't believe what you read
Can't believe what you see
The only thing that matters
Is experience of you and me
Chorus
We did the mission statement
We thought that we did know
The only problem is
That was five long years ago
Chorus
Reflect, Reflect
AR is kind of a curse
How can I improve my teaching
If I don't look at my students first
Chorus
Hey Tom Russell
and Jack Whitehead
I've got to stop reflecting
and get myself off to bed
Chorus
Don't talk to me about Ancova
or the chi-square
You may want to use it
But me I don't know where
Chorus
PD as we know it
I think it is dead
The strategic planning department
their faces are turnin red
Chorus
No more stagnation
No more burnout
It's intellectual engagement
That I've been talking about
Chorus
Here we go again
I need a critical friend
The problem really is
That this process never ends
Chorus
Rob Fisher, songwriter for the band, credits his EDUC801B- Improvement of Teaching class for inspiration for many of the lyrics. He hopes this tune summarizes some of the feelings of the many action researchers of today.
And a special thank you to Jan LeClair for playing the piano for this project.
