Deaf / Hard-of-Hearing

Description

Deaf and hard of hearing: An impairment characterized by deficits in language and speech development because of a diminished or non-existent auditory response to sound. (Ontario Ministry of Education)

Barriers

There are a variety of social and / or emotional implications for deaf or hard of hearing students. For example they may feel that their use of hearing aids or FM systems will lead others to perceive they are less competent learners. This could result in a concern regarding peer acceptance, increase frustration, or a feeling of isolation.

Students who learn American Sign Language (ASL) or Langue des Signes Quebecoise (LSQ) may exhibit the characteristics of a learner for whom English / French is a second langauge as they apply visual language to a written form.
