Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) / Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Description

Autism: a severe learning disorder that is characterized by:

 

(a) disturbances in: rate of educational development; ability to relate to the environment; mobility; perception, speech, and language;

 

(b) lack of the representational symbolic behaviour that precedes language.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder (or autism spectrum disorder) is an umbrella term referring to a group of disorders that are characterized by deficits and impairments in multiple areas of development. These disorders include impairment in social interaction and communication and the presence of restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviours, interests, and activities. They significantly interfere with students' academic and social functioning in the education setting.

 

 Specific disorders under the umbrella term PDD include:

  • autistic disorder
  • Rett's disorder
  • childhood disintegrative disorder
  • Asperger's disorder
  • pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified
