The citation to be read at the awards ceremony applauds Malcolm's research and its contribution to raising the profile of the subject:
Malcolm's position as an international researcher makes him well known in the UK. His research work can only be described as outstanding, as he has an enviable reputation for being able to conduct and disseminate D&T educational research covering the primary, secondary and higher education age phases. Since the mid-1990's he presented papers at the International Design and Technology Education Research Conference (IDATER), more recently at the Centre for Research in Primary Technology (CRIPT) Conference, and has made annual contributions to the Design and Technology Association Annual Conference. He is well known on the international and education research circuit. Additionally he has presented papers and written journal articles addressing a number of audiences, including the Engineering profession.
There are three significant features of Malcolm's research contribution. Firstly, the majority of his work is in partnership with other researchers as he is committed to team working. Secondly, he is well known for designing research programmes that are at grass roots level, involving schools and teachers. Thirdly, he facilitates the notion of D&T research being international - an excellent example being his work on the relationship between D&T and Science.
